Description
Clouds drift lazily by still ocean waters in this calming impressionist painting of the Hilo Bay breakwater in Hilo, Hawaii. Before the breakwater was built, downtown Hilo was taken out by the tsunamis of 1946 and 1960. Today, the breakwater protects Hilo Bay from the rough seas of the Pacific for paddleboards, surfers, kayakers, and boaters. During whale season, whales can be seen on the ocean beyond. Below the surface, honus (giant sea turtles), fish, and dolphins abound. By Hawaii artist Diane Thornton.
